Cell the Astronaut

“Vote for Science” Pincause Submission Mockup

It has been quite of a turbulent time to live in, thanks to the political climate and a rise of ideal conflicts and disagreements between opposing groups. And unfortunately with the increasing denials on scientific-based workings, it is troubling for scientists to may not have the ability in raising concerns of the potential endangerment of our environment, and its inhabitants that will have the misfortune to living in harsher climates, and with little knowledge on things that we should know or need to be discovered.

With these issues at hand, the "March for Science" foundation has asked artists from around the globe to design a symbol to apply in their Pincause, and will be used in representation for 2017's rally in support of Science be an important topic to be recognized and prioritized in governments, as well as in businesses and organizations.

My submission, personally titled "Cell the Astronaut," comes with a rationale based on the root in all life forms, which is the cell. A cell's function is in building an organism and the way it lives and moves, bring forth life and meaning. It is how the imagery of the pin reflects on the visual perception and the workings of a cell. In addition to a cell's representation, there is an added element of water, evidently displayed encapsulating the human face in the centre. It is in reason of water being held as the most valuable component in Earth, in order to sustain life and survival for all living creatures. And the final symbolic representation features the astronaut in a helmet. The reason of using an astronaut as the "main star" (so to say) is not only does it associates with scientific efforts like NASA, but the purpose for an astronaut is to discover. Discover all things new, and to encourage all individuals to acknowledge them, and to develop and evolve with our newfound understandings on how the Universe works.

In spite of the results for this competition, or who the judges chose as their victor, I am—nonetheless—immensely proud of my work, along with the fellow artists who participated. I feel as if we are still helping the Science foundation and their cause cause by raising awareness to others through our creative talents. And artworks such as these can hugely impact people's way of thinking, and can influence others to become more active, progress our society, and open vast opportunities for better living.
